Restorative Healing Circles
Restorative Healing Circles provide an opportunity for community members to come together to address harmful behavior in a process that explores harms and needs and a path toward accountability and repair. “Restorative Healing” is a philosophy of healing as well as a specific set of practices that bring together those who experienced harm. Restorative healing circles help identify who has been hurt and what must be done to repair the harm. In a circle all participants work together to develop a resolution agreement that resolves the conflict.
- In order for a resolution agreement to be reached, all participants’ voices must be heard, and all participants must be in agreement about the terms of the resolution agreement.
- Restorative Healing processes provide Impacted Participants a safe, facilitated. Impacted participants play an active part in deciding how the person who has caused harm can best repair the harm done.
- Restorative Healing processes allow Supporting Participants to describe more holistically how what occurred has affected those they are supporting.
- Restorative Circles also allow for absent participants to contribute their voices through impact statements.
Juvenile Diversion InITIATIVE
The juvenile diversion initiative (JDI) is a county wide early intervention program that prioritize diversion options for youth instead of filing criminal charges. The goal of JDI is to reduce the number of youth who enter the juvenile justice system, engage the community and stakeholders in the youth's rehabilitation, and address the causes of the youth's unsafe behaviors while at the same time fostering accountability to crime victims and community. San Diego County youth have the opportunity to participate in JDI with their family or caregiver and identify their needs and gain access services to address any contributing factors to harmful behavior. Youth in JDI who successfully complete the program leave with an understanding of the impact of their choices and avoid permanent and negative outcomes related to the formal criminal justice system, including stigma, labeling and having a criminal record.
